Many individuals have embarked on shedding those extra kilos, exploring many solutions in hopes of achieving their desired weight. From bidding farewell to beloved treats to engaging in strenuous workouts, they’ve left no stone unturned in their pursuit. If you agree agreeing on this, this blog is for you.

Udwarthanam or Herbal powder massage, the century-old Ayurvedic procedure, helps reduce body weight, improve skin complexion, and thereby increase the overall health of the individual.

Understanding Udwarthanam

Udwarthanam is a specialized body-toning deep tissue ayurvedic massage technique that uses medicated oils or herbal powders in the direction opposite to the hair follicles.

The term “Udwarthanam” comes from two words: “Urdhwa,” meaning upward, and “Varthanam,” meaning to move. So, Udwarthanam signifies “to elevate” or “to move in an upward direction. The procedure provides oleation and fomentation to the body and brings the vitiated Vata and Kapha doshas back to normalcy.

Udwarthanam is particularly celebrated for its effective weight-reducing properties, even though it has other therapeutic effects.

Types of Udwarthanam Ayurveda Massage

Udwarthanam can be administered by using herbal power alone or mixed with medicated ghee or oil. Based on the criteria where the powder is used or not, Udwarthanam can be classified as:

  • Snigdha Udwarthanam – Utsadana

In this type of udwarthanam, the herbal powder is mixed with medicated oil or ghee and made into a paste.

  • Ruksha Udwarthanam – Udgharshana

In this type of udwarthanam, the herbal powder is directly rubbed over the body in a direction opposite to the direction of hair follicles.

Benefits of Udwarthanam Ayurveda Massage

Ayurveda acharyas have included Udwarthanam among the Dinacharya (Daily routine) knowing its importance. Udwarthanam is a non-invasive external therapy and is mainly advised for the pacification of the Kapha dosha.

The benefits can be pointed out as:

  • Advised in the treatment of neurological disorders as it stimulates the nervous system and nerve endings.
  • Brings Kapha and Vata Dosha into normalcy.
  • Helps to reduce excess fat, cellulite, and bad odor from the body.
  • Improves skin complexion
  • Improves mobility of joints
  • Improves blood and lymphatic circulation and thereby helps in body detoxification.
  • Influences the general metabolism of the body.
  • Provides relaxation and calmness to the body and mind
  • Tones up the skin and muscles after childbirth
  • Softens and exfoliates dead skin cells, thereby giving a lustrous glow to the skin
  • Reduces blood cholesterol
  • It can be used to treat edema, a condition characterized by the presence of excessive watery fluid in the cavities or tissues of the body.

Udwarthanam ayurveda massage is commonly administered for medical conditions like obesity and related diseases, high cholesterol, diabetes, and its complications, skin diseases like psoriasis, metabolic syndrome, excessive sleep and drowsiness, nervous disorders, motor neuron diseases, Parkinsonism, hemiplegia, and PCOS.

How Udwarthanam is performed?

Udwarthanam is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that involves a therapeutic massage using herbal powders. The procedure typically begins with a consultation to determine the specific herbal blend needed for the individual’s constitution and health condition. Next, the patient is asked to lie down on a wooden table, and the therapist applies the herbal powder all over the body in an upward stroking motion, which helps in exfoliation and detoxification. The massage is followed by a warm bath to remove the herbal powder and complete the Udwarthanam treatment.

Precautions to be taken

Udwarthanam must be avoided in cases of inflammation, redness, increased temperature, burning sensation, severe pain, wounds, cuts, burns, excessively dry skin, old age, children, infants, pregnant women, and oozing skin conditions such as eczema.

After the procedure, patients are advised to rest, consume light meals, stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities and heavy foods, apply rasnadi choornam on the head, and consider fomentation if needed.
