Irregular period is a common female problem nowadays that affects a considerable part of the population. Pollution, unhealthful eating habits, stressful schedules, and emotional complications are some of the common factors of this problem. Nowadays many treatments are available for irregular periods like hormone therapy, thyroid medications. Ayurveda offers a natural and stress free period treatment that resolves the problem without any chemicals and adverse effects

An irregular period occurs when the length of your menstrual cycle is out of sync with your normal cycle. Irregular periods may be accompanied by abnormal uterine bleeding, such as:

  • Intermittent bleeding or spotting
  • Bleeding post-sexual activity
  • Heavy bleeding throughout your period
  • The menstrual cycle that lasts longer than usual
  • Bleeding after having menopause
  • Your menstrual cycle may be irregular for the first year or two after the onset of puberty.

Types of irregular periods

Oligomenorrhea
Women of reproductive age who have oligomenorrhea have irregular menstrual cycles. The menstrual cycle can last up to 35 days without menstruation.

Polymenorrheais
A condition known as polymenorrhea causes a woman’s menstrual cycle to last less than 21 days. It is a peculiar form of uterine hemorrhage.

Metrorrhagia
The bleeding that takes place in between periods is known as metrorrhagia. It is challenging to distinguish between metrorrhagia and the actual period. It often lasts no more than two days.

Amenorrhea

Amenorrhea is a medical term for not having a period. Amenorrhea happens when a woman skips more than three periods in a row, though it can be challenging to distinguish it from oligomenorrhea.

Symptoms

Prolonged or short cycle: An irregular period occurs when the length of the cycle goes longer than 36 days or shorter than 21 days.

Abnormal cycle: your cycle duration varies from month to month; for example, your period may arrive after 38 days one month and not arrive at all the next.

Intensity of the flow: During an irregular period, the flow is frequently abnormally heavy or light.

Period Duration: A typical menstrual cycle lasts 3 to 5 days. It is irregular if the menstruation lasts more than seven days or less than two days.

Missed period cycle: If you happen to miss three cycles, or around 84 days in succession, you are considered to have missed the entire cycle.

Cause of Irregular periods

The most common causes of irregular menstruation are pregnancy and lifestyle. Hormones are also considered to be the main cause of irregular menstruation in women.

A number of processes can lead to disturbance in periods like:

  • Onset of menopause
  • Early pregnancy
  • Overuse of contraceptive methods or intrauterine devices (IUS)
  • Weight loss or gain
  • Extreme physical activity
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Medical issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or a thyroid problem
  • Medicines such as antidepressants, anti-inflammatory drugs, thyroid pills, and anti-anxiety medications might cause irregular periods.

Ayurvedic Approach

According to Ayurveda, the three Dosha—Kapha, Pitta, and Vata—rule various phases of our cycles. Vata controls menstruation when the egg is not fertilized and the uterine lining is eliminated through menstrual blood. Pitta controls ovulation when the endometrium continues to thicken with blood vessels. Kapha controls the early part of the cycle, when the endometrium thickens after menstruation.

The ayurvedic method of dealing with disease seeks out the underlying reason rather than just the symptoms. Ayurveda provides two types of treatment: Shodhan and Shaman. Shodhan refers to the total purification of the body using Panchakarma therapy. Ayurvedic medicines, diet, and lifestyle changes are used by shamans to balance the Dosha.

After analyzing your body composition, our ayurvedic practitioner will provide you with a personalized therapy regimen that is to be strictly followed. As body composition changes from person to person, so will the treatment. Different types of detoxification procedures will be undertaken, along with herbal supplements. The treatment is to be further supported through lifestyle modifications, diet restrictions and planning, and following a healthy workout pattern.

Lifestyle and diet

  • Follow a balanced diet
  • Include lots of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Consume foods rich in fiber
  • Avoid junk food and unhealthy food habits.

A list of some foods that are beneficial for the condition includes:

  • Plums and berries
  • pineapples and papayas
  • Ginger and Turmeric
  • Apples, pear, and avocado
  • Olives
  • Buttermilk, whole milk, and yoghurt
  • Eggs, Nuts and Seeds
  • Summer Squash

Ayurveda says that women who suffer from such problems should regularly incorporate yoga,.

Yoga is also found beneficial for dealing with multiple health conditions. Practicing various Yoga postures like Padmasana, Bhujangasana, Halasana, Dhanurasana, Sarvangasana, Shalabhasana, Paschimottanasana helps in managing the condition. Regularly practicing various breathing exercise, pranayama and other physical activities into their lifestyle every day also can helps in maintaining ones physical and mental health.

Conclusion

Irregular menstruation is a common problem these days which may affect fertility in later years. But the severity may vary in different people and hence individualized treatment is advised.
