NDIS FAQS

How is the NDIS different?

With direct funding, NDIS provides support to eligible people with permanent and significant disabilities. Having a choice of how, when and where to the receive the same they have an increased participation in the society through employment, skill development and independence

Why did we need a new system?

The old system was inefficient, fragmented, unfair, underfunded and many people with a disability didn’t get the support they needed.

Who will be eligible for the NDIS?

People with a permanent and significant intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psychosocial disability are eligible for support from the NDIS. Early intervention support can also be provided for eligible people with disability or children with developmental delay.

Who manages the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) manages the NDIS.

What is the assessment process?

If you would like to become a participant, you have to meet the eligibility criteria. After that you can call NDIS on 1800 800 110 to make an Access Request.

For assistance to fill up the form you can contact your Local Area Coordinator, early childhood Early Intervention partner or contact your local NDIA office. You can discuss your goals and ambitions and help identify the kind of support you’ll be requiring.

As part of the Access Request process, you will be required to

  • Confirm your identity and/or a person’s authority to act on your behalf.
  • Answer questions to see if you meet the NDIS access requirements (age, residence and disability)
  • Answer questions about providing consent to enter the NDIS and about seeking information from third parties. If you currently get disability support, and you would like your provider to give the NDIS your information, you must first provide consent.

Some additional information might be inquired after you make your Access Request. These could include information about your disability and how it impacts on your day-to-day life. You can provide copies of existing information, including letters or reports, or you can ask your treating health professional to fill out and sign a form.

How does the planning process work?

The next step is the planning process. Once your Plan is approved you will be able to choose a Registered Provider, such as Ayurclinic Australia, to provide your supports.

Are you able to choose the type of support you receive?

NDIS is all about giving people more control and choice over how, when and where they would want to be supported. It is a tailored process to meet individual needs.

You can get therapies, equipment, home modifications, mobility equipment, assistance to employment; take part in community activities, thus giving you a complete, fulfilling life.

Who manages your funding?

You can choose to manage your funding yourself (self-management) or you can opt to have someone else manage it for you:

  1. A plan ‘nominee’
  2. A registered plan management provider
  3. The NDIA

What will the NDIS cover?

The NDIS will fund reasonable and necessary supports that help someone with a disability to:

  • pursue their goals, objectives and aspirations
  • increase their independence, and
  • Develop their capacity to actively take part in the community.

This support may include education, employment, social participation, independence, living arrangements and health and well-being.

How do you get started then?

Firstly, check your eligibility using the NDIS Eligibility Checklist. It will only take 5-10 minutes and you’ll know if you’re likely to be eligible straight away. It’s anonymous; you just have to give your first name.

Looks like you qualify. What next?

Once the NDIS Agency confirms that you are eligible, you’ll sit down with a planner who will help you to develop a plan specifically suited to your needs. The planner will review the information in your access request form and take into account any existing assessments.
