In Ayurveda, the main causative factor for musculoskeletal disorder is aggravated Vata Dosha. Nedan Sevan like Vata vitiating foods, excessive physical work, intake of unwholesome food, sedentary lifestyle, etc. leads to aggravation of the Vata Dosha. The aggravated Vata blocks all the empty channels of the body leading to the development of the disorder within a portion of the body or entire body.

  • Burning sensations in muscles

  • Pain worsens with movements
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Muscle twitching
  • Swelling
  • Limited range of motion of affected joints

Causes of Musculoskeletal Disorders

  • Age: The risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders gradually increases with old age
  • Lifestyle: The way you live and what you do daily can play a role.
  • Family History: Having a history of MSDs in the family may increase the risk of developing MSD
  • Repetitive Movements: Doing the same motions over and over again can be a cause.
  • Poor Posture at Work: If you sit or stand in a bad way while working, it might lead to problems.
  • Daily Computer Use: Working on a computer every day can be a factor.
  • Lifting Heavy Things: Picking up heavy objects can also contribute to these disorders.

Ayurvedic Solutions for Musculoskeletal Disorders:

Apart from certain Ayurvedic medicines and herbs, there are certain panchakarma procedures that are used to treat musculoskeletal problems:

  • Abhyanga: A full-body massage with warm, herb-infused oils for 45 minutes. It promotes skin health and can help with conditions like osteoarthritis, body aches, and obesity.
  • Padabhyanga: A special foot massage that relieves issues like roughness, stiffness, dryness, numbness, and tingling sensations in the feet and legs. It also relaxes and revitalizes the central nervous system.
  • Njavarakizhi: Medicated oil is applied to the body, followed by a massage with warm muslin bag boluses containing cooked njavara rice. It’s beneficial for conditions like rheumatism, high blood pressure, joint aches, and muscle weakness.
  • Virechana: This therapy cleanses the body, especially the liver and gallbladder, by clearing toxins and excess pitta. It purifies the blood and the gastrointestinal tract.
  • KatiVasti: Vasti treatments are excellent for Lower back pains. They help eliminate doshas from the body through the intestinal tract.
  • Janu Vasti: A therapy where medicinal oils are poured around the knee joints in a specially created compartment, using gram flour.
  • Rasayana Treatment: This treatment reduces oxidative stress and free radical damage, making it effective for osteoarthritis.
  • Snehana and Brimhana: These treatments normalize bone health and control the cell-level fire rule (dhatwagni) and tissue transformation (Dhatus).
  • Choorna Swedam: An intensive treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, involving a vigorous massage with herbal powder bundles across the entire body.
