The thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck, produces hormones that regulate a variety of vital body functions. Hormones control an individual’s growth and metabolism. Thyroid level fluctuations cause a wide array of health problems.

Hyperthyroidism is characterized by an increase in Thyroid production, which causes fatigue, energy loss, and a variety of other health problems. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which thyroid secretion levels are low, resulting in slowed metabolism, weight gain, loss of appetite, and an increase in blood cholesterol levels.

Causative factors:

As per ancient Ayurvedic literature, thyroid abnormalities are caused by the depletion of body essence, known as Ojas. The primary and most common cause of thyroid problem is stress. According to the Ayurvedic philosophy, stress causes vata dosha imbalance, which is a factor in various ailments. Exhaustion from over work and stress burns ojas, or immunity and vitality, leading to the emergence of auto-immune disorders.

So from the Ayurvedic perspective, all three doshas are involved but hypothyroidism can be considered as kapha imbalance.  Kapha traits include poor metabolism, weight gain, heaviness, sadness, and coldness. The extra meda dhatu (fat tissue) and the heaviness caused by the kapha dosha prohibit the pitta dosha from performing its cellular level tasks, which affects agni.

Warning signs and symptoms of Thyroid are:
