Nasyam or Nasya karma is a treatment in the Panchakarma therapy mentioned in Ayurveda. Derived from the Sanskrit word “Nasa,” meaning nose, Nasya therapy involves administering medicinal substances through the nasal passages. This therapy holds a special place within Ayurveda for its profound effectiveness in dealing with an array of health issues related to the upper respiratory tract. It is an Ayurvedic detoxification therapy that involves the application of medicated herbal oils and liquid medicines through the nostrils. Since the nose is the gateway to the most precious asset of the human body, the head, the therapy is highly effective in curing a number of diseases and ailments.

The therapy not only helps in removing toxins from the head but also improves the process of oxygenation (prana), which has a direct influence on the functioning of the brain.

Types of Nasya Karma

  • Pradhamana Nasya – In this Nasya Karma, dry powders are blown into the nose to treat diseases caused by Kapha disorders like headache, heaviness in the head, cold, hoarseness of voice, nasal congestion, and sinusitis. It is also effective for curing chronic diseases like cervical lymph and tumors.
  • Brumhana Nasya – In this treatment line, medicated ghee, oils, salt, etc. is used to cure Vata-type disorders like headaches, migraine, dry noses, nervousness, anxiety, etc.  This line of treatments is also the best option for treating stiffness in the neck, dry sinuses, bursitis, heaviness of eyelids, and loss of sense of smell.
  • Shamana Nasya – Herbal medicated decoctions, teas, and medicated oils are administered to treat Pitta-type disorders like conjunctivitis, thinning of hair, and ringing in the ears.
  • Navana Nasya – This is the common type of Nasya karma performed which is used for treating Kapha-Pitta and Vata-Pitta disorders.
  • Marshya Nasya – For this treatment, ghee or oil is administered to treat uneasiness due to a particular disease.
  • Pratimarshya – In this Nasya, the nasal passage is lubricated and massaged with the clean little finger inserted into the nostril after dipping it in ghee or oil. Pratimarshya is great for relieving stress and opening up deep nasal tissues.

Nasya Karma Procedure

The process comprises 3 stages:

  • Purvakarma: In this process, the patient needs to undergo Snehana and Swedana therapies. This process helps in eliminating waste materials effectively from within the body.
  • Pradhakarma: During this process, the head is kept down below the pillows, and the legs and arms are kept straight. The warm medicine is allowed to flow through one of the nostrils while the other is kept closed and the procedure is continued. After this process, the neck, shoulder, palms, and ears are massaged gently and the process is repeated two or three times on a daily basis for a week.
  • Paschatkarma: In the final stage, your mouth will be cleaned with lukewarm water and you will be given medicinal smoke to inhale. Post-treatment care includes a diet regimen and bringing the patient back into a normal diet and lifestyle.
