Ayurveda looks at diseases through a totally different perspective and looks deep into the root causes. Then treatment is prescribed to tend to the root cause. Eczema can look like a simple skin irritation on the skin surface but has deeper roots and can be really difficult to deal with if not taken seriously.  The human skin has seven layers and any kind of skin treatment will include techniques that penetrate deep into these layers. Eczema varies in its types according to the severity.

Signs and symptoms:-

  • Dry and itchy patches on the skin
  • Rashes on elbow/knees, neck, wrists and ankles.
  • Scaly and thickened skin
  • Discoloration

There are various types of eczema. An individual can be affected with more than one type of eczema.  And each type has entirely different triggers that adversely affect your skin’s barrier function. Once the barrier function is compromised then skin resistance weakens.

Ayurveda for Eczema

In Ayurveda, eczema is referred to as Vicharchika and it occurs due to severe factors  like :-

  • Toxins building up in the body system.
  • Following unhealthy lifestyle
  • Consumption of incompatible food items.
  • Lymphatic disorders.
  • Issues with metabolism

Now let us look at some of our most effective ayurvedic massage therapies in managing eczema.

Abhyanga

The process includes massaging the affected area with certain medicated oils (herb infused oils). This improves the circulation of blood, nourishes the body, and prevents dehydration and increase the production and supply of antibodies to the areas treated.

Vamana

In this treatment method, the patient is advices to use herbs or a combination of herbs to induce vomiting.  Vomiting is the process through which helps in clearing Ama(Toxins) from the body. This procedure is considered very  beneficial for certain skin problems like psoriasis, eczema, leukoderma and also useful in managing  other  conditions like rheumatic  disorders, common cold, arthritis, sore throat, oedema and epilepsy.

Virechana

Virechana or purgation is an excellent method for proper elimination of Ama(Toxins) and balance the vitiated Dosha from the body. Certain medicated herbs are used along or in combination for this procedure to eliminate the excess Pitta and Kapha from the body.

Rakta mokshana

This is a method of releasing toxic blood out of the body system. This is effective for disorders associated with skin, liver, spleen and also treats certain conditions like headache and hypertension.

Lepa

Lepa is a semi solid herbal preparation made of Ghee (clarified butter) and herbs. According to the condition of patients, this lepa is applied to the affected areas to treat eczema.

Panchakarma

This is a holistic method in treating Eczema by balancing doshas. Panchakarma treatment aims in detoxifying the body (detoxifying of the liver, cleaning of blood and improving the immune system) which helps in improving blood circulation and making the skin healthier
