Urinary disorders are a common health problem nowadays. This condition is equally difficult for women, men and children.  It compromises our ability to flush out toxins from the body.

The Urinary System is a group of organs including kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. They work together to produce, transport, retain, and eliminate urine. Urine contains the toxins absorbed from the blood, salts, toxins, water, and waste products from our body’s metabolic activities.

“Mutravahasrota Roga” is the term given to disorders affecting kidney and urinary tract. “Mutraghata” are the disorders affecting the urethra and bladder.

Management of UTIs by Ayurveda

As per Ayurveda, Urinary tract disorders are caused by the imbalance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. Vata Dosha is responsible mainly for urinary disorders and can be treated with the help of Mutravirechana(diuretics), that  are capable of  balancing and stimulating the flow of urine.

Ayurvedic management for urinary tract infections includes clearing obstructions from the urinary tract, providing detoxification to clear out infections, and toning the kidneys to help in restoring Apana Vayu function (Vata). This comprehensive approach of detoxification – Panchakarma detox therapy is the holistic method of elimination of the toxins from the body and may include treatments like:

Vasti: This process is very useful in cleaning the urinary tract which enables to calm vata. The procedure includes anal administration of certain medicated oils with suitable herbal decoction; rock salt, honey, and herbal powder paste are mixed together and administered together. These procedures help in maintaining normal PH, muscle tone, and neurological control of urinary bladder thus useful in chronic and recurring UTIs.

Uttaravasti: In this process, medicine is applied to the urinary bladder through a urethral route. This is very helpful in treating chronic UTI.

Snehapana: Here, the medicated ghee is orally administered to transport therapeutically effective components to different tissues of the urinary tract.

Virechana: Induced purgation using medicinal herbs to make clear the gastrointestinal tract.

Abhyanga: This therapeutic full-body massage enhances circulation, revitalizes the body and mind, and releases blockages.

Swedana: Medicated steam is administered here to flush out accumulated body toxins and thereby restoring the cell metabolism.

Signs you may have urinary disorders

It is always advised to consume at least 2 litres water per day to avoid severe urinary disorders. Also prolonged intervals between urination can reduce the muscular actions that help you to control your bladder. There may be many instances where you won’t experience any symptoms outwardly. So always keep an eye on the following symptoms for the persistence of UTI:

  • The urge to urinate frequently
  • The uncomfortable feeling that your bladder is still full, even after you have just urinated
  • Burning sensation or pain while urinating
  • Inability to pass the normal amounts of urine or pass urine completely
  • Discoloured urine.
  • Presence of pus or blood in the urine
  • Involuntary & uncontrolled passage of urine
  • Abdominal pain
  • Pelvic pain in women
  • Rectal pain in men
  • Fever and shivering
  • Vomiting sensation

Lifestyle Recommendations for Urinary Disorders

  • Reduced exposure to extreme heat and sun.
  • Avoid the urge to hold urination
  • Eat a healthy and balanced diet.
  • Dosha aggravating foods should be regulated at any costs. For example bring down the consumption of hot and spicy food.
  • Drink water at regular intervals
  • Practice simple Pranayama and yoga therapies
