Ayurveda is the science of life and adopts various techniques and lifestyle modifications for reaching the desired results. According to Ayurveda, our body functions based on the three functional energies, or Tridoshas, and every disease or medical condition arises because of the imbalance of these three doshas, namely: Kapha, Vata, and Pitta

Knee pain is one of the most commonly complained-about health issues nowadays and is the result of Vata dosha, which is air dominant. Vata dosha weakens circulation, metabolism, and digestion. It is frequently dismissed as a minor joint ailment, but if left untreated, it can develop into a serious health problem that interferes with our daily lives.

How Ayurveda helps in managing knee pain

Ayurveda combines various traditional medicinal practices and techniques to address health issues. Diet restrictions are to be strictly followed while undergoing an ayurvedic treatment.

Weakened joints are caused by the accumulation of toxins (Ama). With this long term deposit of toxins the joints are inflamed and lose its strength. So the goal is to get the toxins out of the body system and strengthen the affected areas.

The exact schedule & combination of treatments needs to be decided by the doctor depending upon the condition of the patient.

Let us have a look at some of the commonly used Ayurvedic procedures –

  • Januvasti (Knee joint therapy) : This involves pouring of specially prepared warm herbal oil over the knee. The oil is retained inside a well created using black gram paste or whole wheat flour. The herbal oil used in the procedure restores the lubricating fluid in the joint and maintains integrity of the structures involved in the joint. It reduces the pain and stiffness in knee joints and thus helps to improve mobility. Janu Vasti is mainly used in certain pain management conditions like osteoarthritis of knee joints, osteoporosis, and Arthritis of knee joints and chronic pain of the knee joints.
  • Pichu therapy: This palliative measure is extensively used for the remediation of nerve disorders caused by Vata imbalances. For the treatment, wool or cotton cloth is folded to the thickness of one’s palm, dipped in warm medicated oils, and then placed on the patient. Based on the patient’s requirements and ailments, it can also be used for neck, spine, hip, chest, knee, and shoulder. Pichu therapy is mainly used for localized pain and inflammation and are prescribed for patients suffering from persistent migraines, neck pain, back pain, fractures, and dislocations.
  • Aabhyanga, or medicated oil massage, which is a gentle ayurvedic massage technique that is aimed at improving blood circulation and relaxing the muscles. Ayurveda believes that the best remedy to pacify vata is by oil application and massaging. Application of these oils helps to relieve inflammation around your knees and the massage increases circulation throughout the knees.

Ayurveda upholds the philosophy, “What you eat, you become.” So managing a health problem is incomplete without managing your food habit. Observing a strict diet and consuming vata-pacifying foods is imperative. Always be mindful of your food habits. Avoid dry and cold food and include a lot of fresh vegetables and fruits. Follow a balanced diet and maintain your healthy body weight.

Treatment is to be followed by a healthy lifestyle. Either follow a light workout regimen or do daily yoga therapies.
