Circular structures called discs are found between the bones that make up our spine. These discs serve as shock absorbers that soften snaps, jolts, and shocks of all kinds caused by falls, accidents, undesirable movements, etc. These intervertebral discs are prone to breaking apart, swelling, splitting, and slipping out of place, which can result in a hernia. Any disc in the spine or vertebral column may experience such negative impacts.

Slip disc is the common name for this type of spinal disc herniation. Although slip discs are more frequently found in the lower back and spine, they can rupture or break in any location along the vertebral column. A slipped disc is a condition that affects the spine and causes a tear in the spinal disc. Depending on the location of the herniation and the kinds of soft tissue that become involved, the symptoms of a herniated disc can change.

Here are a few typical signs of herniated /slipped discs:

  • Pain and numbness.
  • Pain in the arms and legs
  • Severe struggle to move.
  • Persistent low backache
  • Loss of coordination
  • Lack of bladder control
  • Pain during passing stool
  • Muscular weakness.
  • Any prolonged position or activity aggravates the pain.
  • Acute discomfort during the night.
  • Aching, burning, and tingling in the impacted area.

Reasons for Slip disc are:

  • Old age injury
  • Lifting weights
  • Excessively demanding physical activity
  • Fall or shock
  • Previous physical injury
  • Obesity
  • Smoking

Types of Slip discs

Slip discs can be divided into four categories:

Dehydration of the discs results in swelling. This condition is known as disc dehydration. By enlarging the diameter and shrinking the height, it flattens the dic.

Disc prolapse: In this situation, the discs outer layer fractures, allowing the inner layer to come through. When the projecting layer comes into contact with the nerves, the patient experiences tingling pain. Some patients experience all the symptoms of a slip disc in this scenario.

Disc extrusion: In this type of situation, a specific area of the protruded nucleus pulpous penetrates the disc’s outer layer and separates.

Disc sequestration is an advanced form of disc extrusion in which a disc fragment that has become separated from the spine becomes embedded within the spinal canal gel.

Ayurvedic Management for Slipped disc

Slip disc, called Grudrasi in Ayurveda, was categorized as one of the disorders brought about by the vitiation of Vata. Vata, which is one of the primary doshas in the body, is also responsible for mobility and efficiency. The goal of Ayurvedic treatment is to rectify the underlying functional imbalance in order to restore harmony. The primary goal of ayurvedic treatment for slip discs is to return the aggravated vata to equilibrium and thereby to a healthy state. In Ayurveda, we offer the most successful and effective treatment for herniated or slipped discs.

The therapy includes the internal administration of medications as well as Ayurvedic Panchakarma therapy for detoxification and rejuvenation. Therapies like Abhyanga swedam, Nasyam, Patra Potala swedam, Choorna Pinda swedam, Pizhichil, Shirodhara, Kadeevasthy, Greevavasthy, Navarakizhi, Vasti, and others are carried out according to the situation and necessity.

These treatments aim to reduce inflammation, release muscle spasms and nerve compressions in the problematic area, strengthen the tissues that support the spine, and nourish the joints by enhancing blood flow.

The following ayurveda therapies constitute the primary phase of the therapy process:

Abhyanga: The technique involves massages with medicinal oil and herbal solutions. This will open up the pathway for the physical condition to be resolved.

Swedana: The procedure, Swedana, will help to unwind and reenergize the body. This procedure generally involves body warming. In order to strengthen the cells and improve the patient’s condition,

Shodhana: Shodhana aids in the body’s elimination of toxins. The body will be cleansed and detoxified. After the therapy, the patient will feel revitalised.

Only upon analysis of the body composition, the mental state, and the family history will the patient be prescribed a therapy regimen to be followed.

Diet and Lifestyle

  • A balanced and healthy diet should be part of every meal.
  • Do not eat heavy meals, which are difficult to digest.
  • Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
  • Avoid physical exertion after eating meals.
  • Avoid overeating and excessive exposure to cold temperatures.
  • Avoid eating chilled foods and beverages.
  • Patients should avoid prolonged sitting or standing.
  • Give up smoking.
  • Practise posture-enhancing activities while standing, walking, and sleeping.

Conclusion

Ayurveda therapy could be effective if followed properly. The results can only be obtained if the prescribed therapy and medication are followed along with compulsory lifestyle modifications.
