Jaundice occurs as a result of problems in the functioning of the liver, gallbladder, or pancreas. It is characterized by a color change of the skin, sclera (the whites of the eyes), and mucous membranes. The yellow color is caused by a high level of bilirubin. It is a yellow-orange bile pigment. Bile fluid is a liver secretion. This secretion is formed due to the breakdown of red blood cells.

  • Obstructive jaundice: This happens because bilirubin couldn’t be eliminated due to an obstruction in the bile duct caused by the liver.

Ayurvedic management of Jaundice

According to Ayurveda, Jaundice is a disease which is caused due to the Pitta Dosha. ‘Kamala is the Ayurvedic term for jaundice. It is mainly caused by the aggravation of Pitta Dosha. The liver’s excessive bile production makes the liver dysfunctional and this leads to jaundice. Aggravated pitta affects the gall bladder and liver.

Now let’s see what ayurvedic procedures are done to manage jaundice.

ShodhanThis is the process of complete body detoxification through Panchakarma therapies. This involves the following procedures: Vaman, Virechan, Basti, Nasya, and Raktamokshan Procedures like virechan are considered to be very beneficial in managing jaundice.

Shaman – Through this process, we attempt to balance the doshas through the introduction of diet and lifestyle modifications.

Nidana Parivarjana (Keep away from the causative factors) – This therapy targets keeping an individual liberated from disease by staying away from the causative factors of the disease and it is an important part of Ayurvedic therapy in all diseases.

Virechana Therapy – The course of Virechana assists in getting rid of abundant pitta from the body. Certain purgatives are administered orally which clean the liver, decongest bile and eliminate any blocks from which the bile streams.

Detoxification through Panchakarma can also help optimise positive results. Ayurveda is a holistic approach which focuses on removing the root cause. This requires time and patience. Panchakarma therapies help with whole-body detoxification. This is to be followed by a strict diet and lifestyle.

Regular intake of mild purgative herbs will also remove block in the biliary tract. From an ayurvedic perspective, this will also reduce excess Pitta Dosha.

Diet

  • One-week fruit juice fast for
  • Drink juices of lemon, pear, grape, beet, carrot, and sugarcane.
  • Regulate the use of fats and oils
  • Pulses and legumes should be avoided.
