Beauty and Ayurveda
An absolute and eternal glow is the result of healthy and balanced body, mind and soul. Ayurveda provides a wholesome definition of beauty – shubhanga karanam sundaram which is transformation of our body, mind and soul to most auspicious level. By beauty we normally mean the fairness of the skin for each person, while Ayurveda considers beauty beyond our superficial definition. The three fundamentals of beauty are – Inner self, outer beauty and lasting beauty.
- Roopam
- Gunam
- Vayastyag
Roopam is the external beauty but not related to body size, hair, skin or eye colour. Instead it is reflection of good health within. Radiant skin, shining hair and healthy nails are some of the characteristics of roopam. It is further classified as Chhaya and Prabha.
Chhaya is called the close-up beauty. It is usually enhanced with creams, lotions etc. But it depends on good health. A clear complexion is the result of good food and proper digestion. Prabha is subtle beauty. It is the glow that comes from within.
Gunam Gunam is the character or inner beauty of a person. Gunam is the glory of our mind / soul manifesting in our thoughts and action. Without the genuine inner mind, any outer decorative activity would result in vain. Inner beauty is an expression of hope, optimism, self confidence and power. It is attained by combination of a good lifestyle, proper diet and hygiene in day to day life. It is the reserve of our energy, creativity, emotion and strength.
Vayastyag is the eternal beauty as to slow down the aging process. It is the outcome of both roopam and gunam. As long as we take care of our inner beauty- emotions, spiritual well being along with a regular lifestyle and good diet, one can feel and look younger.
Our beauty is spoiled and premature aging happens due to the imbalance in doshas, dhatus and improper lifestyle and weak digestion. Some of the key factors that is related to the beauty –
