2. Treating PCOS naturally

PCOS is a condition that occurs due to the hormonal imbalance. This hormonal imbalance affects the follicular growth inside the ovary and makes the affected follicles stay inside the ovary. Abnormally high levels of male hormone is released which in turn causes many long-term effects to the body. PCOS is a complex metabolic disorder which involves:

  • Insulin resistance
  • High level of male hormone
  • Imbalance of LH- Luteinizing hormone
  • Imbalance of FSH- follicle stimulating hormone

Irregular menstrual cycle, obesity, persistent acne, abnormal hair growth, infertility, diabetes and cardio problems at higher extent are some risks involved in this disorder. Since it is a complex hormonal disorder, the root of the problem is to be treated instead of just suppressing the symptoms. Ayurveda helps in balancing the hormone imbalance, tissue nutrition and flushing the toxins out. The PCOS in Ayurveda is treated naturally through ideal diet and lifestyle recommendations. Herbs are prescribed for the hormone stabilizing and panchakarma to rejuvenate the whole body, mind and spirit.

Since the medication given for PCOS tries to restore the metabolic imbalance, the drugs causes many side-effects such as dizziness, abdominal cramps, headaches, nausea, bloating and so on. The contraceptives used for hormones are said to increase the risks of diabetes and cholesterol.

Hormone replacement therapy works by administering the hormones externally. This further puts your endocrine system to sleep. A hormone which is meant to be released naturally is supplemented externally, the body is put to inactive mode. This may temporarily cure the symptoms but definitely not the right treatment in a long run.

Ayurveda takes a wholesome approach to any problem and cures the condition gradually and effectively. Dietary and lifestyle advices, herbal supplements and panchakarma are some of the strategies involved in curing the disorder. • Balancing the hormones
  • Purification therapies
  • Diet, lifestyle recommendations

This principle of treatment is aimed at clearing the obstruction in pelvis, regulates the ovarian & endocrine function, reduces the androgens etc.

5. What is Ayurvedic concept of polycystic ovarian disease?

According to Ayurveda, PCOS is basically an imbalance of Kapha dosha . Taking a closer look,

Vata is responsible for following -

  • movement of follicles,
  • rupturing of the ovary wall to release the mature ovum
  • movement of ovum towards the uterus
  • movement of finger like projections that guide the ovum into the fallopian tube

Pitta is responsible for the action of hormones - the energy of transformation.

Kapha's heavy qualities are responsible for

  • nurturing the growth of follicle in ovarian cycle.
  • nourishing the development of tissues

PCOS occurs when kapha blocks vata and pitta thus obstructing the movement and suppressing the transformation. Due to the excessive kapha and ama stored in artavavaha srota - a channel that carries menstrual fluid and ovum - the vata in the ovarian cycle gets totally blocked. Due to vata blockage, Pitta gets blocked resulting in the disorder in the hormones that carry the energy of transformation. The stored kapha and ama expresses itself as cysts inside the ovary. Pitta aggravation manifests as acne and body hairs.

Thus Ayurveda takes a multiple approach in removing the toxins through purification therapy, herbal supplements and lifestyle changes. When the dosha gets balanced, the symptoms gradually disappear and get cured.
