World Alzheimer’s Day

Alzheimer is a most common form of Dementia. Dementia is a disorder that has severe effects on the memory that hinders your daily life. Find a detailed analysis of Dementia and Ayurveda – here. World Alzheimer’s day falls on 21st September. It is a event that tries to raise awareness on the adverse effects of the disease, so that people can take the medical help before it is too late.

According to stats, in Australia, Dementia is the second leading cause of death. Out of total deaths in males, 5.4% is due to Dementia and it is 10.6% in females each year. Far from just being a memory loss disorder, is a deadly disease with many complications. It is degeneration of brain cells and with a fewer cells, the brain is incapable of communicating with body, organs and its functions. The disease slowly progresses and there is no complete cure or reversal of the symptoms.

Preventive measures:

Multiple factors and their complex interactions cause this disorder, just like other chronic diseases. The factors like age, genetics, lifestyle, co-existing medical conditions and environment contribute to the intensity of the illness. There are some general preventive measures that might influence in slowing down the progression of this disorder if there is onset of symptoms.

  • Eat healthy diet – more anti-oxidants that would power your brain. Add more whole grains, vegetables, fish and berries.
  • Balance your weight
  • Cholesterol, blood pressure and blood glucose levels to be in constant check
  • Exercise – however small the activity, it increases the blood flow to the brain.
  • Increase more social interactions and intellectual activity.
  • Quit smoking and limit your alcohol consumption.
  • Take up yoga and meditation and calm your senses.
  • Protect your head from injury or trauma.

Apart from the genetic and age factors, roots of this disease cannot be traced exactly in modern medicine. Ayurvedic ancient wisdom has named this disease as ‘smruthi nasha’.  Three main causes are stated –

  • Reduction of Dhatus – tissues
  • The abode of intellect loses balance – Impairment of Satva guna by Rajas and Tamas
  • Manovaha srotas (the channels that carry cyclic impulses to the brain that is responsible for memory) disturbed by Vata imbalance

With the advancement of age, the tissues are damaged and the brain build-up becomes more dry.

To treat this dryness, Ayurveda suggests hyper-hydration of head through therapies. It also helps through natural detoxification and balance ofdoshas.

Unadulterated form of herbs help to energize the tissues and cells. Massages and therapies would give a great physical and mental relief for the patients.
