Healing in Ayurveda is the integration of faith, love, devotion, and the sense of unity and the sacred nature of humanity. Ayurvedic approach to assessment and treatment of a disease varies with individuals. Three modalities of treatment are explained in Ayurveda- ‘Yukti Vyapasraya’, ‘Satwavajaya’, and ‘Daiva Vyapasraya’.

Yukti Vyapasraya is the treatment in which food and drug is used to cure a disease. Herbal therapy requires the additional support of the proper diet to be effective. Diet can enhance or counter the effect of herbs. Herbs provide subtle nutrition; foods provide more gross or substantial nourishment. Panchakarma (five-fold de-toxification therapies of Ayurveda) is the basis of herbal therapy.

Satwavajaya is the psychological aspect of the treatment. ‘Satwa’ is mind; ‘avajaya’ means to succeed. It is the win over the mind or psyche. Any physical illness involves an underlying psychological imbalance. As a general rule in treatment psychological factors tend to overweigh physical factors. A patient may have right diet and herbs, but if the mental state is agitated or there is negative attitude about the treatment, it will not likely to be effective. Satwavajaya increases the Satwic qualities of mind.

In the present world lack of spirituality is the sole cause of many diseases. Daiva- Vyapasraya is the spiritual way of healing in Ayurveda. Diseases may be a sign of wrong action in life. It requires spiritual re-examination of our lives, particularly if the disease is severe. Hence self examination is the initial and fundamental step of resolving a disease. Yogasanas, pranayama, chanting of mantras, visualizations, meditations, wearing of gems, comes under daivavyapasraya chikitsa .These methods provide a mental empowerment in harmony with the rhythm of the cosmos to facilitate the cosmic healing force.

HOLISTIC APPROACH

Ayurveda is a complete way of life. As a holistic health system comprising diet, Yoga, massage, detoxification, herbal remedies, meditation and daily lifestyle, Ayurveda improves not only a person’s health, but also their well being, behaviour and state of mind.

Ayurveda is prevention-oriented, is free from harmful side-effects and treats the root cause of a disease rather than just the symptoms. Ayurveda views illness as caused by an imbalance in a person’s physical or mental constitution and therefore seeks to gently bring a person’s body and mind back into a healthy balance.

Although Ayurveda can be used to alleviate various conditions, it is founded on the principle of preventing disorders in the long term rather than waiting for problems to manifest themselves. Thus it is the ideal way for healthy individuals to maintain good health and general well being.

With a few small changes to a person’s daily life, it is possible to live the Ayurvedic way and reap the benefits. Ayurveda is certainly not intended to replace modern medicine, but rather to give people the tools to treat their body according to its needs, leading to emotional and mental well being and good health.
